What does the Essex County Judge Do?
The main responsibilities of this full-time position are as follows:
To preside over surrogate’s court, settling property affairs of deceased members through the administration of wills, trusts, and small estates, as well as all adoptions and guardianship proceedings.
To preside over family court, addressing matters of custody, visitation, child support, child abuse, child neglect, and juvenile delinquencies. Family Court cases account for over 70% of the matters which come before the Essex County Judge.
To preside over superior criminal court matters, handling felonies such as serious assaults, domestic violence, sexual assault, drug sales, and robberies, and act as firearms licensing officer.
